There are actually two types of Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes occurs in children and youth when their bodies do not produce a hormone called insulin. Insulin takes the sugars your body digests from the bloodstream into your body’s cells. Type 2 Diabetes also involves insulin. In this type of Diabetes, although you have insulin, your body does not use it correctly. As a result, the blood sugar (glucose) rises uncontrollably and causes a problem called hyperglycemia.
When you have hyperglycemia, your body cannot get the energy it needs to function. The high glucose levels can also damage major organs, such as the kidneys, heart, nerves or eyes.
Some people groups have a higher chance of getting Type 2 Diabetes: African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and the elderly.
Because untreated Type 2 Diabetes is so destructive, you should seek treatment right away if you have any of the symptoms to the left.
Early Detection & Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes can lower the risk of organ damage from the disease.
